Cheerful Cardboard Fish

He piled words the length of the top-floor hallway,
In alphabetical order, in bags that smelled like paste
While she distributed cheerful cardboard fish
And left trails of peppermint butterflies on the roof.
He gave her a handful of shiny stones
Held together by thread and buttons.
She gave him a necklace of twenty-three wax beans
and some stewed fruit.
