Cheerful Cardboard Fish

He piled words the length of the top-floor hallway,

In alphabetical order, in bags that smelled like paste

While she distributed cheerful cardboard fish

And left trails of peppermint butterflies on the roof.

He gave her a handful of shiny stones

Held together by thread and buttons.

She gave him a necklace of twenty-three wax beans

and some stewed fruit.
