She spotted him as she prepared karma estimates.
He shuffled around outside the tunnel,
Looking distracted and vaguely perplexed,
As if he’d just discovered an unfamiliar button on his shirt.
She wrapped a cup of beeswax in an over-sized handkerchief
And rolled it off the end of the balcony.
His unfocused gaze lifted toward the railing.
And dully—briefly—flickered with something akin to tranquil sweetness;
Or maybe she just imagined it.
