Once home, I placed the box of old photos in front of my most comfortable chair and began sorting. There were hardworking farm girls with high foreheads and fuzzy hair, wearing layers of tissue-thin lace over modest muslin dresses. Next was a plump, good-natured schoolgirl with heavy eyebrows and little round lips, smiling sweetly for the camera. In another photograph, an older Victorian lady with a high white lace collar wore the expression of someone sitting on a hard wooden pew at the end of a three-hour sermon.
