Umber (19.3 — Vera’s Story)

“They never got better; they both died four days later, two hours and two miles apart.  Papa brought Agnes’s boy, Ervin, home that night and told me to feed him and get him ready for bed.  My little cousin was too young to understand that his mother wasn’t going to come back.  But I was eight, and I had seen a heifer die that spring so I knew our mothers were gone. They were buried the next day.  I stayed home with Ervin.  He cried the whole time the grown-ups were at the funeral.  So did I.”
