Umber (19.8 — Vera’s Story)

Kate and Myrna sometimes complained about my cooking, but never offered to help me, saying they were too busy and that I was lucky not to have to do their chores.  Occasionally, my grandma would attempt to instruct me in the use of a few simple spices, how to fry an egg without breaking the yolk, and how to use bacon grease to add flavor to green beans.  But I was not a quick learner, and after ruining several meals with too much black pepper and dried mustard, she must have decided that it was better to just let me be.
