Umber (19.12 — Vera’s Story)

“You had better get out of that tree right now, Ervin Eakley, you know Papa doesn’t want you climbing up there, the branches are too weak to support you.  And you’d better come next time I call you!”

He just laughed and said in a sing-song voice, “You can’t get me.  Verey can’t get me!”

I tried to think of a threat that would make Ervin come down from the tree without me having to climb up and get him.  “I’ll tell Papa if you don’t mind me,” didn’t work, since my father and everyone else was at least fifteen minutes away, and way out of earshot.  Then, in a flash of inspiration, I told him, “If you don’t get down, I won’t let you have any of the apricot tart I made.”
