“Are you alright, Ervin?” I said, trying not to sound panicked.  At first he just shook his head up and down, sobbing, but then he climbed to his feet, still sobbing, rubbing his shoulder.  He limped towards me.  His lip was bleeding, but it didn’t look like he’d broken any bones.  I picked him up and carried him back to the porch, reassuring him that he was going to be alright, though I wasn’t at all certain that was the case.  I sat him down on the porch swing and got some cold compresses to put on his ankle, which was starting to swell up.  “You keep your ankle propped up,” I told him.  “Does it hurt a lot?”
