Ervin nodded his head, sniffling. His ankle was quite swollen by this time. I propped a pillow behind his head, tucked a blanket around him on the porch swing, and replaced the cold compress on his ankle. I handed him his bedraggled old teddy bear, and sang the “Birdie, Birdie” song. Soon he was looking much more content. He asked if he could have some of the apricot tart. I had forgotten all about it. Assuring Ervin that he could have a piece right away if it would make him feel better, I hurried inside to check on my creation.
