Umber (19.26–Vera’s Story)

Grandma, of course, had plenty to say to me.  She started clucking about how ashamed I should be, and to get the mess cleaned up, and what kind of example was I setting for Ervin, and how when she was a girl, she would never have made such a scene.  She said something about “gratitude” and “wasting food” and the sin of pride, and my poor father who worked so hard all his life, and how I didn’t appreciate what I had.

I thought to myself, “No wonder papa’s no fun; he’s just like his mother.”
