I slipped into the very last pew, which was nearest to the exit, and listened to the practicing choir. I knew that my family disapproved of papists, but the celestial sound of those Latin-chanting voices filled me with a rapture that I could not pull away from. My eyes adjusted to the dim light. Blue and red votive candles flickered in front of a niche containing the statue of a pale and delicate woman. Her eyes were cast heavenward. She wore a black veil and a white dress, and her bare feet stood atop mound of pink plaster rose petals.
