My heart began pounding. In spite of the thrill of exploring this new, ornate and wildly mysterious universe contained within the walls of the church, I had to force myself to ignore the undercurrent of fear that plagued me during each of my visits. I was afraid that I was getting involved in something no protestant girl should consider, but, more than that, I worried that someone would realize that I was not a Catholic, and demand to know what business I had in invading this sacred space and looking upon secrets not intended for my eyes.
As the man approached, I frantically tried to come up with a reasonable explanation for my presence.
