Umber (19.40 — Vera’s Story)

“What did your family say when you told them?” I asked.

Vera didn’t answer right away.  She seemed to be struggling to find a way to explain.  Finally she said, “I kept it secret for a long time, and when at last I did tell them, I was too cowardly to speak to them face to face.  I knew they would be unhappy with me, and with Kate for not keeping better track of how I was spending my afternoons.

I did eventually confide in Kate.  We had grown closer since Papa had let me stay with her during my senior year of high school.  I was bursting with the excitement of my new venture, so one day I blurted out the news that I intended to become a Catholic.  She said, “Vera, what are you thinking?  This is going to kill Papa.  And he’s going to kill me!”
