Umber (21.8 — Leroy’s Story

The next time I saw Vera I was having a smoke outside the church.  I helped her lift the baby buggy to the top step again, and asked her what her son’s name was.  She explained that the baby was her nephew, not her son. 

“I haven’t seen you at mass on Sunday,” I said.  She told me that she wasn’t a Catholic, but was thinking of becoming one.  Just then, Florence came out the door, gave Vera a dirty look, grabbed my arm and said, “Let’s go, Leroy.”
