Umber (21.13 — Leroy’s Story)

Meanwhile, Florence and her family were pressuring me to tie the knot.  She wanted a big Catholic wedding with a high mass, which meant that first I would have to take instruction and make a profession of faith in order to become a member of the church.

I hemmed, hawed and resisted for a long time, until Florence cornered me and started crying, which made me panic.  In a moment of weakness, to get her to calm down, I agreed to take classes from the priest…what was his name?  Father Hooligan?  She signed me up the next day, and on Thursday evening I dutifully plodded down the stairs into the darkness of St. Agnes’ Elementary School cafeteria.
