Umber (21.14 — Leroy’s Story)

The cafeteria smelled like creamed corn and scouring powder.  A mesh of heavy chain link covered the windows, to protect them from kickballs from the playground.  Florence pushed me toward a large round table, turned around and left.  I sat in one of the too-small chairs.  There were about a dozen other people there.  My eyes were just getting used to the dim light when someone flipped on the overhead light fixtures. 

Directly across from me sat Vera. 

“I thought you’d be at Lefty’s,” she said.
