Florence’s purple face stared at us. Her mouth was moving fast. I was glad for the glass between us. I tried not to look annoyed, or worse, guilty, as I made some excuse to Vera. As I hastily paid the cashier for our coffee, I heard the bell on the shop door ring. Florence had stormed into the soda fountain. Waves of fury emanated from her. I smiled politely at Vera and said innocently, “Thank you for that enlightening conversation, Miss Birdsall.” “Thank you, Mr. Tibbs,” she replied gravely.
Florence glared at Vera as she hauled me out the door. I could hear the hoots of a few of the coarser patrons. I hoped Vera could not see that my ears were burning.
