Umber (25.4 — Kate’s Letter)

Vera spent the night before her wedding at my house in Kearney. She was there, alone, when Alfred and I got home that evening. She hoped, naively, that you would show up at St. Agnes’ to see her married, since she told you in her letter when and where her wedding would take place. At least you could have let me bring Ervin to the wedding, seeing how close he an Vera are; I know he, at least, wanted to be there. I didn’t have the heart to tell Vera you had decided to disown her; in fact, I still haven’t said anything, because I hope you will change your mind. I wish you would answer her letters, Papa. It was bad enough for her to lose her mother; does she have to lose the rest of you as well?
