Leroy was less than gallant, of course. He quizzed his sisters regarding what Opal had supposedly said about him, and they were happy to report in great detail, though I am sure they embellished the truth quite a bit. I tried to engage Vera in conversation to distract her.
“Vera,” I said, ” before we eat, let’s go look at the falls.” She and I followed the narrow path upstream, where the water roared over the rocks.
“Please forgive my grandchildren,” I said. “Opal Barnes is nothing to write home about. They’re just jealous because you took their baby brother away without their permission.” Vera managed a small smile, and as we chatted, I began to wonder how Leroy had managed to find someone of Vera’s caliber. I liked her, and was sorry that she had gotten mixed up with my grandson.
