Pretty soon the others caught up with us, complaining that they were hungry. “Let’s eat before the ants find our food,” Vera said.  We settled around the perimeter of the tablecloth.  Something didn’t look right.  In place of Vera’s silverware there were little sticks lying beside the plates.

Pearl and Jewell shrieked with laughter.  “Vera, the pack rats took your mother’s silverware,” they howled.  “You really shouldn’t have brought your good knives and forks to a picnic, Vera.”
