Poor Vera, she had tried so hard to make a good impression on her husband’s family.  We ate what we could without utensils.  “Why can’t we just go to your place and eat there?” Jewell demanded.

Vera and Leroy both looked at the ground.  “I don’t think there’s quite enough room there for all of us,” Vera said, looking embarrassed.

“We ‘ll take you to your hotel, Grandma,” Leroy said quietly.
