A wistful sigh came from a different photo. It was Vera, older, vastly pregnant, holding a string of quail. She laughed ruefully, a small, sad laugh.
“After the baby died, Leroy went back to gambling, playing poker mostly. Sometimes we had a lot of money; usually we didn’t. When he learned I was expecting again, he sold his car to pay for groceries. Lorna sent him money occasionally, most of which he gambled away. But his luck changed when he won a gold mine in Snowy Range. We both wanted to get away from the logging camp, so we borrowed an old truck and moved to our new property. The cabin wasn’t much, but it belonged to us.
