Umber (44.1 — The Matron)

July 16, 2012 § 2 Comments

A plump matronly woman looked out from the photo in my hand.  She was holding a toddler I recognized as Vera’s little girl, Oleander.  The woman was singing “London Bridge is falling down,” bouncing the little girl up and down gently.  Oleander was laughing.

“Where is Vera?” I wondered aloud.

“Oh, she’s cooking at the school cafeteria, school cafeteria, school cafeteria,” she sang, “She’s cooking at the school cafeteria, but she’ll be home soon!”

Oleander laughed her little toddler laugh again, and leaned her head on the large woman’s neck.
