I asked, “What happened, Oleander?”
“We went to the rodeo,” she said. Daddy was the chute boss. There were calf ropers, barrel racers, Indian dancers and sharpshooters, bull riders, steer wrestlers, and saddle bronc riders. It was the most exciting time I’d ever had in my life. Daddy showed me the horses in their stalls, and introduced me to cowboys and clowns. He was the chute boss, and I was so proud of him.
“I sat in the stands with Momma and Miss Brigid, and watch men bucked off the backs of steers, while the rodeo clowns ran so close to the big scary animals. And there were pretty Indian women in beaded buckskin dresses dancing to the beat of the huge drum their men were pounding. Just when I thought there could be nothing better, I heard the announcer say, “Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s give a big Wyoming welcome to Miss July Benbow!”
