Umber (47.9 — Oleander’s Story)

I was frantic at this point, and I started howling at the top of my lungs.  Mama ran outside and tried to carry me into the house, while I struggled to break free so I could run after my father.  I kept screaming, “Daddy, come back, come back!”. But the more I screamed, the faster he ran, until he disappeared just as Mama and Miss Brigid dragged me across the porch and through the doorway.  The bang of the screen door sounded like the door to my childhood slamming shut.
