I walked in.  Mama said, “Ollie Belle, put your slippers on, you had a fever last night, and here you are fanning around.”

“Have you seen Silvertip, Mama?”

“He’s not feeling well this morning, either.  We’re going to let him rest a bit.”

Something about the way she said it told me that he was worse than she let on.

“Can I see him?”

Mama and Miss Brigid exchanged glances.
